Why I Built This: Solving the Group Dinner Nightmare

During group dinners, I often found myself checking receipts multiple times because it was difficult to remember who ordered what. A friend of mine usually took charge of ordering during our trips, but repeated tracking errors turned the end-of-night math into a stressful disaster.

I realized that relying on mental math or standard calculator apps wasn't enough because they only show you the final answer. I wanted a calculator that keeps every single calculation visible on the screen, allowing everyone to see exactly where the numbers came from. That exact frustration became the foundation for developing Simple Sheet.

Practical Tips for Group Dinners

Most articles will tell you to simply divide the total by the number of people. But what happens when you have a massive group, or you need to keep a permanent record of who paid what?

Handling Asymmetrical Orders

One dinner in particular involved a friend ordering steak and wine while everyone else had simple pasta. Splitting the bill evenly didn't feel fair, so I started using subtraction before dividing the total. Establish the "Base" as the total receipt amount, create a separate row for the expensive item, and use the subtraction operator to remove it from the pool. You can then divide the remaining balance among the rest of the group. This maintains complete transparency.

Integrating with Professional Spreadsheets

For large events, a simple app screen might not be enough. After copying the numbers into Excel several times by hand, I added the "All Copy" feature so the calculation history could be pasted directly without editing. This isn't just a basic text export; it formats your calculation rows so you can paste them directly into Excel or Google Sheets as a data table.

Common Mistakes When Splitting Bills

Even with a calculator, group dinners can get complicated. Avoid these frequent pitfalls:

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I split uneven expenses?
A: Yes! Instead of splitting the grand total equally, you can subtract specific items (like an expensive dish) on a separate row before dividing the remaining balance.
Q: Can I export the calculation to Excel?
A: Yes. Simple Sheet features an "All Copy" button specifically designed for external spreadsheet compatibility. It allows you to paste your calculations directly into Excel or Google Sheets as a formatted table.
Q: Can I share the calculation with friends?
A: Absolutely. You can generate a unique URL to send via WhatsApp, iMessage, or email, allowing everyone in the group to see the transparent math on their own devices.
Q: How many people can I split a bill between?
A: There is no limit. You can use the divide (รท) operator to split the base amount by 2, 10, or even 50 people instantly.
