How many portions are you cooking today?

  • 🥩 Meat 600g
  • 🧅 Onion 2.0 pcs
  • 💧 Water 1200ml
  • 🍛 Roux 4.0 blocks

Why I Built This: The Single-Serving Struggle

I frequently make curry, but I prefer cooking single-serving meals using a compact pot on my gas stove. The problem? Most store-bought curry roux boxes only provide water and ingredient instructions for massive 8-portion batches.

Trying to mentally divide 1100ml of water, 600g of meat, and 3 onions by 8 while trying not to burn anything almost always led to mistakes. My single servings would turn out either as a watery soup or an overly salty, thick paste. I created this specific Simple Sheet template so I could instantly scale the exact golden ratio down to a single portion—or up for bulk meal prep—without the guesswork.

Practical Tips for Perfect Curry

Cooking the perfect Japanese-style curry isn't just about the ingredients; it's about the ratio. Many people simply guess the water amount when making a batch, resulting in inconsistent flavors. Our template ensures your liquid-to-roux ratio stays perfectly balanced.

1. The Golden Ratio

A standard block of Japanese curry roux typically requires exactly 300ml of water, 150g of meat, and half an onion to reach peak consistency and flavor. Maintaining this ratio—whether you are making 1 portion or 12—is the secret to restaurant-quality thickness.

2. Flavor-Enhancing Secrets

Once you have the mathematical ratios down, you can elevate your curry with these simple additions:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can I use this template for other recipes?
A: Absolutely! Once you open it in the app, you can easily rename the rows to reflect a cake recipe, pasta sauce, or even a cocktail mix. Just enter the measurements for a single serving, and let the app scale it up for your next party.
Q: What type of meat is best for Japanese curry?
A: Chicken thighs, pork chunks, or beef stew meat work wonderfully because they hold up well to simmering. If you prefer a meat-heavy curry, simply adjust the meat row's base value in the app from 150g to 200g before scaling.
Q: Do vegetables like carrots and potatoes affect the water ratio?
A: Vegetables release a small amount of water as they cook, but generally not enough to ruin the consistency. If you add a massive amount of watery vegetables (like tomatoes or zucchini), consider slightly reducing the water by about 10% per portion.
